Dijon is one of France's most beautiful towns, for its centre has been spared by both wars and the town-planning of the '60s. The conservation area is one of France's foremost, due not only to its size, but also to the diversity and value of its buildings. The local council has a highly dynamic policy for its flower displays, based on its desire to preserve and restore the heritage and create many parks and gardens with great swathes of green linking the town centre to the parks of the urban periphery.

The rue de la Liberté forms the major east-west axis of the town, running from the wide, attractive place Darcy and the eighteenth-century triumphal arch of Porte Guillaume , once a city gate, past the palace of the dukes of Burgundy on the semicircular place de la Libération , east to the church of St Michel . The street is pedestrianized and lined with smart shops and elegant old houses, and most places of interest are within fifteen minutes' walk to the north or south of it.
