Ouro Preto, mining city located in the mountains could not enlarge despite a growing population: it has thus been decided that a new capital would be built. Belo Horizonte was then founded in 1897.

Down in the valley, at 23 km from the north of Belo Horizonte, the small colonial town of Sabará hides treasures of baroque art. You will also find Diamantina on the road that leads to Brasilia which embodies the "baroque mineiro" art.
