CHÂTEAU DES COSTES

France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Le Castellet
Château des Costes is a place like no other... It was born in the secret of an inspiring Provence, and was spotted by the Lumière film brothers, who fell in love with its unique architectural style. The chapel dates back to the 13th century, and the main building was completed on the site of a priory during the Belle Epoque in 1905, just as Europe's wealthy aristocracy were beginning to flock to the South. The Riviera was born, and Château des Costes is the heir to that era, when the elegant exiled themselves to Provence for its mild winters.A few years later, the Lumière brothers, originally from the region and aware of its potential, acquired the property and converted it into a charming hotel. The property remained a hotel until the end of the 1960s.It was then acquired by private individuals, who made further modifications, such as the teardrop-shaped swimming pool.

Château des Costes, located in Le Castellet in the Var, has a rich history marked by several key periods:

Medieval origins:

The original site dates back to a medieval religious priory, the remains of which gave way to the current building. The chapel associated with the estate is thought to date from the XIIIᵉ century, according to some sources.

Reconstruction in the early XXᵉ century:

The main building was constructed around 1900 on the foundations of the former priory[1][6]. Its architecture incorporates historical elements while adopting a contemporary style for its time.

Lumière Brothers period:

The property belonged to the inventors of the cinematograph, Auguste and Louis Lumière, who transformed it into a prestigious private hotel. Their visit left its mark on the place, notably through the name of the ‘salon Lumière’.

Contemporary renovation:

The estate has undergone a meticulous restoration to become a top-of-the-range events venue, while retaining its authenticity. Recent refurbishments include a designer swimming pool and modular reception areas.

Ancillary historical events:

The site was requisitioned by the Italian Army at an unspecified time (probably during the Second World War), adding another layer to its military history.

Today, the castle combines its medieval heritage, its luminous past and modern facilities to create a unique setting.
